KXT on Broadway

Press Release
Sydney

Theatrical Saboteurs’ (The AgeDoppelgangster (UK/Australia) bring a miraculous new work about living in dark times, violence, and disorder to Sydney.

This May a duel is taking place. Inner-city Ultimo is now the fictional medieval town of Cross Roads. UK/Australian theatre company Doppelgangster invite audience to sit in two rough grandstands and face each other, as the KXT on Broadway Theatre is transformed into a brutal and deadly jousting arena. Arrows will whiz through the theatre; actors will be climbing a siege tower, attempting necromancy, and crashing through castle walls.

The production takes inspiration from the dark period of history of the same name – The Anarchy (1138-53) – and follows the company galloping on hobby horses down the dangerous path of past works they’ve presented in Sydney/Gadigal Country: Puntila/Matti, The Eternity of the World, and Everybody Loses: The Death Diary of Dr Karl Patterson Schmidt – which have generated walkouts, physical fights, and cancellations, along with cult followings and critical acclaim. It’s part shocking anticomedy, part historical folk-horror, part pagan ritual, and part psychedelic experiment.

Death is certain. Loot everything.

Doppelgangster are an experimental theatre company.

Formed in 2015 and based between Sheffield (UK) & Melbourne (Australia), Doppelgangster is a collective of artists led by academic Dr Tom Payne and trouble maker Tobias Manderson-Galvin.

The company’s work spans theatre, site-specific performance, live art, and immersive experiences. Doppelgangster are constantly pushing the limits of the performance and theatrical forms in order to respond to the twin global crises of climate and class. Their globally recognised work is the result of an anarchic collaborative model drawing on a range of popular and unpopular media from
histories to hollywood cinema, fine art to video games, verbatim theatre to DIY music.

Celebrating their tenth year, Doppelgangster continue to make work which is ‘wildly experimental and wildly entertaining’ (Daily Review), and ‘stunningly messy and chaotic’ (The Music).

Doppelgangster has presented across Australasia, Europe, and the UK.
