QTOPIA
Press Release
Sydney
On a crisp autumn afternoon QTOPIA in Forbes St Darlinghurst threw open its doors to the curious. Anticipation fuelled the air as fashion and fiesta merged within its walls.
This former police station and two other nearby unique locations, are regarded as the largest centre for queer history and culture in the world. How the winds of change blow! This is the second Pride Fest to occur over the 18-month existence of Qtopia. As contrasted with Mardi Gras in Australia, Pride Month is the northern hemisphere equivalent. Sydney can luxuriate and delight in even more artistry from across the nation.
Artistic and Programs Director Carly Fisher writes: “Our goal isn’t just to hold a festival – it’s to lead one that reflects the best of Queer cultural programming globally.” A diverse program brimming with offerings certainly attests to this muscular statement.
There is something for everyone in this line up of 150 events across the calendar month which will engage 400 artists. Happenings ranging from stand-up comedy to cabaret rub shoulders with debates, workshops, podcasts, theatre, tours and education
programs. So, many an opportunity to stay within or branch out of your comfort zone.
At the elaborate launch event (sumptuous fare and purple hued gin and tonics on arrival) organisers emphasised their hope that the festival also attracts an audience beyond the queer community. Echoing the cultural load that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people often endure, here is the chance to share this festival with all, the desire being to reveal the evident and the sometimes unseen diversity of the LGBTQI community.
The location of the festival of course is the historic hub of Aussie queerdom. These very locales at Taylor Square where demonstrations occurred, parades coursed by and flags furled, along with the shocking arrests and vitriol from toxic orators condemning the “lifestyle” (hideous word). In an ever-changing world of equality never before was there a time to celebrate.
We are promised a mild winter I read. No excuses then to not come to the party
