I have received this response from our reviewer who was covering the production of Daughter as part of the festival and I support her decision to not review this show – Editor
There is and always will be a place in the world for confronting, thought-provoking theatre that sparks conversation. However, there is a difference between confronting and traumatic. ‘Daughter’ at Sydney Festival was firmly planted in the latter category and as such, I cannot submit a review. For a show touted to be about toxic masculinity, it turned out to be a horrific display of just that. I left the theatre utterly shaken and disturbed, and judging by the wider response I was not alone. Toxic masculinity is an important and enduring subject that deserves to (and should) be spoken about and challenged, but there is absolutely no scenario where glorifying rape and assault is okay.
