The latest Listies’ show finally hits Sydney after a COVID-enforced delay, so is it worth the wait? Sitting in the theatre with my three and a half year old I am interested to see how he will respond to this show (target age is advertised for the Listies as 4 – 500 million) and also interested to see how the rest of the audience will react. It was a suitably varied age group although I could not spot any 500 million year olds.
So was the audience going to be satisfied… within seconds they were laughing and cheering and when Matt Kelly becomes the ‘Roadie’, bending over and pulling down his pants to reveal some bum crack, the laughter and screams bounce off the walls. I think we can safely say it’s another successful show unfolding… or unravelling as far as Richard Higgins is concerned.
If you have seen a Listies show then you will know that the team pepper the show with jokes that are aimed at ages, all over the place. Today we ranged from the usual and expected fart, bum, snot and poo jokes to an aside about the departing ScoMo and a Beyoncé impersonation. Of course there has to be a list and this time it was musical instruments with the obligatory misspelling jokes. Highlight of the show was the appearance of their baby – an accidental purchase on Amazon. “We ordered a baby grand piano and ended up with a full size piano, a baby and a grand.. so that turned out all right”. The audience erupted with the baby and its antics. Throw in a some water gun and a can of crazy string action into the audience and the 60 odd minutes just disappears.
While it seems on the surface to be a simple and haphazard set up and delivery, this the usual well planned and phrased structure delivering on pace, craziness and silliness. Just what we all needed. While my three and a half year old was only getting the basic silliness of the entertainment, he was also getting a huge joy from the excitement around him. He is already well entertained with a good poo story or calling someone a poo-bum…. I look forward to watching him grow into the next joyous age of silliness and watch him get more and more out of each Listie show he sees… because he will be seeing more.
