Oscar Wilde’s play The Importance Of being Earnest is known as one of theatre’s best examples of witty satire. The repartee is swift, the commentary on Victorian society and its manners is stinging and the characters are formidable and unforgettable. In Happy Hour Productions’ interpretation we are presented with “Two women, eight characters, three hundred and twenty-seven costume changes” which means there is no intention or expectation for a highly crafted and refined production. This was always meant to be a fun night – and it was.
Kathryn Bray and Rachel Alexander embrace the absurd storyline and present us with a show that has one foot in the farce genre and the other in slapstick. The actors swap roles and token costumes continually, sometimes with the appearance of a breakneck pace and at other times with truly exceptional timing and creativity. Sometimes they overplay their hand and ham bits up too much but the goal of this show is to have fun and it succeeds.
