Celebrity Theatresports is an annual charity event not to be missed if you happen to have both a heart and a funny bone. Twenty four competitors make up six teams, comprised of celebrities and theatre sport professionals alike to compete in a three round challenge, all in the name of raising funds for CanTEEN.
Met with energy from the start, hosts Ewan Campbell and Josie O’Reilly and the competitors, improv musician (Gep Blake), human scoreboard, and celeb judges alike are here to put on a show. It’s truly a night out for everyone…and I don’t say that lightly.
If you’ve never seen theatre sports before, it’s a ripper of a night to be introduced. No script, no plan, audience challenges… it’s a flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of night. There’s incredible prize packs to be won in a raffle, all in the name of raising money for Canteen.
Joshua Bell (Canteen spokesperson) inspires the crowd with an unassuming but heartfelt speech about the realities of growing up as a child that has been diagnosed with cancer. Ollie Bailey-O’Reilly delights with a special performance. Celebrities frantically run about in a 3 minute race to fundraise as much as humanly possible from the crowd.
We saw the likes of Adam Spencer, Benita Collings, Matt De Groot, Rob Carlton, Andrew O’Keefe, Jioji Ravulo, Nicola Parry and Daniel Cordeaux. Plus a whole bunch of theatre sport pros like Monique Dykstra, Michael Gregory, Jane Watt, Ewan Campbell, Lisa Ricketts, David Callan, Murray Fahey, Josie O’Reily, Rob Johnson and Jeromaia Detto on stage.
This partnership between Impro Australia and Canteen form a night that opened my heart…and my wallet. Do yourself a favour next year, and get your butt in a seat at the Enmore for one of the highlights in the theatre.
